What the report says

Bunyoro political leaders and analysts have backed Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara’s anti-corruption drive, while saying the effort will only have lasting impact if citizens, local leaders and state agencies stay involved after the minister’s visits end. The remarks were reported in Bunyoro Sub-region, where the campaign has already led to interdictions, arrests or investigations affecting 74 public officials, including resident district commissioners, their deputies and other local government leaders.

According to the source article, Woman MP Jovia Katusiime said the campaign has reminded civil servants of their duties and urged elected leaders to organise community barazas, collect complaints and pass credible cases to security agencies. She also pointed to allegations of money being demanded for government jobs in Hoima and Kikuube, saying recruitment should be based on merit and that both bribery and extortion should be investigated. Dr James Byarugaba, a political analyst and PLU coordinator in Kagadi District, said public participation is essential because communities can monitor projects, demand records and press for accountability.

Other local leaders offered caution as well as support. Buhaguzi County MP Francis Kazini said authorities should verify complaints before taking action, while former Hoima City West MP Dr Joseph Ruyonga said the campaign should be assessed after the regional tour and supported by lasting mechanisms. The discussion highlights broader concerns about corruption in local government and the need for follow-through through investigations, prosecutions and continued public scrutiny.
