Bulemeezi Mourns Former Masaza Cup Defender Rogers Ssebyondya

Bulemeezi County Football Club and local supporters gathered in Kasana, Luweero District, to mourn former defender Rogers Ssebyondya, a member of the team’s 2019 Buganda Masaza Cup-winning side. According to Nile Post, Ssebyondya died at Mulago National Referral Hospital after reportedly suffering internal injuries during Sunday’s Masaza Cup match against Kyaggwe County.

He was first taken to Kasana-Luweero Hospital before being referred to Mulago, where he died on Wednesday morning. The tribute event took place at Kosovo Playground, with players, officials and fans remembering him as a committed centre-back who contributed to Bulemeezi’s historic 2019 title run. Club representatives also said he had returned to the team after a period away from football.

Yosam Ntegge, speaking for Bulemeezi County Chief Kkangaawo Ronald Mulondo, described the death as a painful loss for the club and the wider community. Team manager Juma Kasolo said Ssebyondya’s absence would be strongly felt and urged players to stay united and continue chasing the county’s Masaza Cup ambitions.

The report said Ssebyondya’s body was expected to spend Wednesday night at his home in Wobulenzi, then move to Nkumba on Thursday, before burial on Friday at his ancestral grounds in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District. Beyond this incident, Masaza Cup football is a major community competition in Buganda, and the death has highlighted the emotional and physical risks that can follow on-field injuries.
