Buganda, Rotary step up fundraising for mobile water clinic for island communities

Buganda Kingdom and the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese Highland are stepping up fundraising for a mobile water clinic intended to improve healthcare access for people living on islands in Lake Victoria, especially in the Ssese and Buvuma districts. The effort is aimed at communities where travel by water can make it difficult to reach medical services, according to the Nile Post report.

The initiative was discussed at a planning meeting at Bulange, Mengo, where Buganda Kingdom officials outlined the need for a boat-based clinic that can deliver treatment and health outreach directly to remote island residents. Joseph Kawuki, the Kingdom’s minister for local governments, the Kabaka’s tours and external affairs, said the project is meant to serve island communities facing long-standing transport barriers to care. He said the Kingdom and Rotary want the clinic to support both routine treatment and outreach activities.

The fundraising target is set at about US$44,600, which is expected to cover construction of the mobile clinic and essential medical equipment. Buganda Kingdom minister for social development and health, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, said healthcare remains a priority in the Kingdom’s development agenda. Rotary representative Ivan Kasambeko said the project could bring needed services closer to vulnerable groups, including children, adults and older people.

The partners have set September 30, 2026 as the fundraising deadline and are appealing for support from government, organizations and individuals. More broadly, mobile health services are often used in hard-to-reach areas where geography limits access to clinics and hospitals.
