Buganda Mourns King Oyo, Calls Him Kabaka’s ‘Younger Brother’

Buganda Kingdom has joined the people of Tooro in mourning the death of Omukama King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru, with Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga describing the loss as one felt beyond Tooro and across Uganda. In a condolence message reported by Nile Post, he referred to Oyo as the Kabaka’s “younger brother” and said the two kingdoms have long maintained close ties through their royal families.

Mayiga said the relationship between Buganda and Tooro dates back to the 1830s, and he noted that when Oyo became king in 1995 as a three-year-old, the Kabaka of Buganda was among those named as his guardians. He said the late monarch had been committed to preserving Tooro’s heritage and improving the welfare of his people, making his death a significant blow to the kingdom.

The report says Oyo died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at age 34, ending a reign of nearly 31 years. He was born in 1992 and became Omukama after the death of his father, Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995. His death came 31 years and one day after his father’s passing.

Buganda Princess Katrina Sarah Ssangalyambogo also paid tribute, describing Oyo as a national figure who grew up in the public eye and defended Tooro’s culture while supporting peace and development. The statements underline the symbolic importance of the Tooro monarchy and the longstanding links between Uganda’s traditional kingdoms.
