Buganda Minister Urges Men to Give Women Land for Coffee Growing

What the report says
Buganda Kingdom Minister for Women and Children Mariam Nkalubo has called on men to allow their wives access to family land so they can grow coffee and other crops, saying women’s participation in farming can raise household incomes and support community development. According to Nile Post, she made the remarks during Women and Children’s Day celebrations in Ntenjeru, Bugerere County, Kayanga District, under the theme “Empower Women to Cause Change in Entrepreneurship, Health and Environment.”
Nkalubo said land access would help women take part more meaningfully in agricultural production and urged families to treat women’s economic activity as a shared benefit rather than an individual effort. She also encouraged women to grow medicinal plants, saying they could serve both household and wider community needs. The minister praised local leadership in Bugerere for mobilising residents around development efforts and said progress depends on cooperation with structures linked to the Mengo administration.
The event also focused on environmental conservation. Nkalubo urged residents to plant trees and other useful plants to protect natural resources, and she personally planted a tree at the celebration as a symbolic gesture. She said women should help promote environmentally friendly habits and lead community mobilisation for positive change.
Nile Post also reported that she raised concerns about health challenges in communities and urged residents to seek medical attention when needed. More broadly, the remarks reflect ongoing efforts in Uganda to connect women’s land access, agricultural productivity and household welfare, especially in rural areas where farming remains central to livelihoods.
