Buganda Kingdom Raises Concern Over Rising Road Accidents and Drought

Buganda Kingdom has warned that two pressures are increasingly affecting communities in the region: road crashes and prolonged drought. According to Nile Post, the Kingdom said many of the reported accidents are linked to reckless driving, including cases involving alcohol, and urged motorists, pedestrians and other road users to behave more cautiously.

The concern was raised as the Kingdom continued a road-safety campaign through CBS and BBS, while also supporting fundraising for Nkozi Hospital. The planned hospital is intended to help treat accident victims, especially along the Kampala-Masaka road. The report said the Kingdom has already contributed Shs2 billion to the project, with backing from partners including Centenary Bank and Rotary.

Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga said preventing crashes should be treated as a shared responsibility and encouraged motorists to wear seat belts, avoid drunk driving and make safer choices before setting off. He also linked road safety to the wider wellbeing of families and communities that rely on transport for work and trade.

On agriculture, the Kingdom said drought is hurting farmers, especially in Buddu, and urged greater investment in irrigation. Mayiga encouraged farmers to use wells, boreholes and expert surveys to identify suitable underground water sources. The broader message was that Buganda needs stronger road safety, healthcare and climate adaptation measures to protect lives and livelihoods, while this background fits into a wider East African pattern of heavier weather stress and pressure on rural farming.
