What the report says

Buganda Kingdom has said it will continue supporting public health work in Uganda through community mobilisation, sporting events and its health-related projects, as part of a broader national push to prevent disease. The Kingdom was represented at the fourth national conference on disease prevention and health promotion by Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, its Second Deputy Katikkiro and Minister of Finance, held at Speke Resort Munyonyo under the Ministry of Health.

According to Nile Post, Nsibirwa said the Kingdom uses initiatives such as the Masaza Cup football tournament, the Kabaka’s Birthday Run, construction of health facilities and schools, and youth education campaigns to promote healthier behaviour and awareness. He framed these activities as part of Buganda’s contribution to prevention, healthy living and access to essential services.

Vice President Jessica Alupo, who attended as chief guest, urged stronger community participation in health promotion, saying it helps people make informed choices and seek medical care earlier. Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi also called on the public to use health facilities and on local leaders to support, rather than hinder, public health programmes. Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwiine said cultural and religious leaders were included because of their ability to reach people at grassroots level.

The conference, now in its fourth year, reflects an ongoing effort to link the Ministry of Health with traditional and faith leaders. In the same meeting, the Kyabazinga of Busoga, Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV, raised concern about teenage pregnancy in Busoga, showing the wider focus on community health challenges.
