Buganda Kingdom Backs Mengo Senior School Akwana House Project

The Buganda Kingdom has pledged support for Mengo Senior School’s Shs19 billion Akwana House project, according to Nile Post. The proposed development is intended to expand the school’s facilities with nine dormitories, a dining hall, a computer laboratory and other learning and accommodation spaces.

The commitment was made by the Buganda Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, after he met school officials at Bulange-Mengo. During the meeting, the school presented plans for a fundraising run scheduled for August 15 as part of its campaign to raise money for the construction work. Mayiga said the Kingdom would back the school’s initiatives and welcomed the inclusion of a dining facility and computer lab in the project.

Nile Post also reported that the Buganda Kingdom minister for education, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, praised Mengo Senior School for educating students who have gone on to serve in various sectors. The school’s deputy headteacher, Glorious Bua, thanked the Katikkiro for supporting the fundraising drive and urged more well-wishers to contribute.

The project matters because it is aimed at improving infrastructure at one of Buganda’s long-established schools while also reflecting broader efforts to upgrade school accommodation and technology facilities in Uganda. More generally, school expansion projects like this are often linked to rising demand for better learning conditions and student housing.
