What the report says

Buganda Kingdom has endorsed Uganda’s monthly National Cleaning Day and urged residents to use it to improve hygiene at home and in their communities. According to Nile Post, the kingdom’s message was delivered by the Ssabwana of Busiro County, Charles Kiberu Kisiiriza, speaking on behalf of Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga during a special Mass at Lubaga Cathedral ahead of Bulungi Bwansi and Local Governments Day events.

The Mass was held to pray for Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and the people of Buganda before celebrations due at Ssaabawaali Gombe in Kyaddondo County. The service was led by Rev. Fr. Achilles Mayanja, who called on Ugandans to support nation-building and said truth and justice should be pursued in relation to election-related disputes. Princess Eugenia Nassolo, the Lubaga North woman MP, also encouraged people to keep their homes clean and take part in Bulungi Bwansi activities.

Mayiga, through Kiberu, praised the government’s cleanliness campaign and asked subjects of the Kabaka to participate actively. The kingdom also linked the initiative to its long-running Bulungi Bwansi tradition, which promotes collective responsibility for sanitation and orderly surroundings. The report said the government launched National Cleaning Day in July 2026 and set the last Saturday of every month for community cleanups, aimed at improving sanitation and helping prevent disease.
