Bufunda Lorry Park Sanitation Concerns Raise Health Fears

Drivers and operators at Bufunda Lorry Park in Ibanda Municipality, western Uganda, have complained about the condition of the public toilet at the facility, saying poor sanitation could expose users to illness. According to Nile Post, users described the latrine as poorly maintained and at times contaminated with human waste, while some said they have had to use paid toilets outside the park instead.

Nile Post said its own observation found broken sections of the toilet structure, adding to concerns about hygiene and safety. The report also noted that users are charged Shs500 to use the facility, prompting questions about why its condition remains poor despite the fee. The lorry park serves drivers and operators in Bufunda Division, making the issue relevant to many people who depend on the site each day.

Lorry park chairperson Jamada Baale rejected the complaints, saying they were politically motivated and that leadership was concerned about the welfare of users. Bufunda Division Town Clerk Wilbroad Kamugisha acknowledged that the toilet is in bad shape, but said efforts are underway to restore it to acceptable standards. He also urged the park leadership to put in place sustainable maintenance measures. More broadly, the report highlights ongoing concerns about sanitation in busy public places and the health risks that can follow when basic facilities are not properly maintained.
