PewterReport.com reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened training camp with several early standouts and a few concerns from the first practice. The outlet’s Day 1 “studs” list highlighted backup quarterback Jake Browning, rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst, outside linebackers David Walker and Rueben Bain Jr., and cornerback Zyon McCollum.

According to Pewter Report, Browning, signed in the offseason to back up Baker Mayfield, looked composed and connected with Hurst for a red-zone touchdown. Hurst, a third-round pick in a crowded receiver group, was noted for his size, speed and sharp work in drills. Walker, returning from a torn ACL suffered during the previous training camp, produced a would-be sack, while first-rounder Bain drew attention for his burst off the edge. McCollum made one of the defensive highlights by intercepting Mayfield on a throw intended for Emeka Egbuka.

The report’s “duds” were not all based on poor performance. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs was listed because he did not practice after reportedly tweaking something during a running test, though Pewter Report said it was told the issue was not serious. Wide receiver Tez Johnson had multiple drops before finishing with a deep catch from Browning, and cornerback Benjamin Morrison was described as limited while working partly with a trainer.

The observations matter because Tampa Bay is sorting out depth and competition at key spots, including backup quarterback, wide receiver, edge rusher and cornerback. Pewter Report said the Buccaneers were scheduled to return for the second day of camp on Thursday morning.
