British Columbia issues evacuation orders ahead of fast-moving wildfires

What the report says
British Columbia’s authorities have issued evacuation orders in and around Summerland as the Bald Range wildfire continues to spread across the western Canadian province, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. The fire triggered a state of emergency early Saturday, with officials saying thousands of people have already been displaced. Residents in affected areas, including the Peachland watershed, the Brenda Mines area and parts of Lower Princeton, were told to prepare to leave immediately.
The district of Summerland, which has a population of about 12,000, also reported power outages and told people to boil water. Local and provincial officials said firefighting efforts are under way, with about 1,500 firefighters deployed across British Columbia. Emergency Info BC said the province has issued dozens of evacuation orders and alerts as conditions change quickly.
Canadian MP Amelia Boultbee said her thoughts were with evacuees, volunteers and emergency crews. Premier David Eby said the province has enough resources and additional aircraft available, and urged people to follow evacuation instructions without delay. The article also places the fires in the wider context of a severe Canadian wildfire season, with climate change and recent heat conditions cited as factors that can intensify fire risk. Similar wildfire activity in Washington state has also affected air quality in the region.
