What the report says

The Independent Uganda reports that Britam Uganda and Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited have launched a partnership in Kampala to widen access to insurance, investment and other regulated financial services through Airtel Money. The collaboration, announced on July 22, is designed to use Airtel Money’s mobile payments network and customer reach alongside Britam’s insurance, life assurance and asset management expertise.

According to the report, the initiative will run under the “Insurance Ku Ssimu” campaign, which aims to reduce barriers such as travel distance, paperwork and limited business hours while keeping regulatory and customer protection requirements in place. The first product available through the arrangement is Motor Third Party insurance. Airtel Money users can buy the cover by dialling 185*761#, submitting vehicle details and authorising payment with their Airtel Money PIN. Customers then receive an SMS confirmation and can access a digital Motor Third Party sticker.

Britam Uganda Managing Director Allan Mafabi described the arrangement as a broader financial protection and wealth-building effort, not just a single-product launch. Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda CEO Japhet Aritho said the partnership builds on mobile money’s role in expanding participation in the economy and now seeks to support longer-term financial security.

The companies said customer education will be part of the rollout through media campaigns, market activations, digital education and live demonstrations. The Independent reported that additional products may be introduced depending on customer demand, responsible product design and regulatory approvals, with the partners assessing success through uptake, customer understanding, continued use, service quality and reach among underserved groups.
