Brig Gen Hyeroba takes over as 3rd Infantry Division commander

Brig Gen Michael Walaka Hyeroba has assumed command of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces’ 3rd Infantry Division in Moroto, according to Nile Post, taking over from Maj Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma. The handover took place at the division headquarters in northeastern Uganda and was overseen by Lt Gen Sam Okiding, the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and Inspector General of the UPDF.

The change comes as the division continues to oversee security operations across parts of Karamoja, Teso and the Elgon sub-region. Nile Post reported that Sserunkuma was praised for helping maintain peace and security during his tenure. Okiding thanked him for what he described as professional service and said the division should build on the progress achieved.

Hyeroba said he would work to continue the foundation laid by his predecessor and called for cooperation from commanders, soldiers, local leaders and community members. Okiding also urged division leaders to support the new commander and strengthen security efforts from the grassroots.

Community leaders at the ceremony welcomed the transition as an opportunity to acknowledge improved peace in Karamoja.
