BREAKING: Obore, Six Others Granted Bail

Parliament communications director Chris Obore and six other officials accused in a large corruption case at Uganda’s Parliament have been granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Court, according to Nile Post. The group had been on remand at Luzira Prison since being arraigned on July 1, 2026, over allegations linked to an alleged Shs27 billion scandal involving embezzlement and causing financial loss.

The court set varying cash bail amounts for each accused, including Shs30 million for Obore, Shs20 million for several others, and Shs35 million for two officials. Their sureties were also required to provide non-cash bonds of Shs300 million each. In addition, all seven were ordered to surrender passports and land titles as part of the release conditions.

The officials had previously been interdicted from their jobs after a directive from the Inspector General of Government, with the suspension framed as necessary to protect the public interest while the case proceeds. The charges fall under Uganda’s Anti-Corruption Act. In the broader background to the case, former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among was also linked to the wider investigation but was not charged; earlier reports said action against her was later dropped. The bail decision is an important step in a case that has drawn attention to corruption allegations inside Parliament and the pace of investigations before trial.
