BREAKING: Kivumbi granted bail

Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, the National Unity Platform deputy president for Buganda, has been granted bail by the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court, according to Nile Post. He is facing charges of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society. The ruling comes after he spent weeks on remand in the fresh case.

The article says the new case followed Kivumbi’s re-arrest soon after he had earlier been released on bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court. Nile Post reports that he had previously spent nearly six months on remand in a separate terrorism-related matter, before the High Court granted him bail in July with a cash requirement of Shs10 million and sureties on non-cash bonds.

After that earlier release, Kivumbi was intercepted while traveling from Butambala to Kampala and later resurfaced at Nateete Police Station before being moved to Butambala. Opposition figures and his lawyers had raised concern about his whereabouts during the period he was missing. The fresh charges now before the Butambala court are separate from the terrorism case.

NUP deputy secretary general Lewis Rubongoya welcomed the bail decision and expressed hope that Kivumbi would not be arrested again. The broader case is significant because it involves an opposition leader, repeated detention, and allegations tied to political unrest and anti-government activity in Uganda.
