What the report says

Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease, according to Nile Post, after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo for several years became ill, traveled back to Kenya, and later died. Health authorities said the patient passed through public screening after arriving in Nairobi and was then isolated and treated at Nairobi Hospital before laboratory tests confirmed the infection.

The Ministry of Health said contact tracing is underway and 28 contacts have been identified so far, including family members and health workers who cared for the patient. Officials are also trying to trace passengers and crew from the flight the patient took to Nairobi. The government said it is arranging a safe and dignified burial in line with Ebola protocols and has notified the World Health Organization.

The case comes amid a wider Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the region, particularly in the DRC, while Uganda recently reported that its own outbreak had ended. Nile Post reported that Kenya had screened hundreds of thousands of travelers, tested samples across several laboratories, and trained thousands of health workers as part of preparedness efforts at border points and other entry locations.

Health officials are urging the public to stay calm, follow hygiene guidance, avoid close contact with people showing Ebola-like symptoms, and seek care at recognized health facilities if they feel unwell. In general, outbreak control depends on rapid detection, isolation, contact monitoring, safe burials, and community engagement.
