What the report says

Formula One has confirmed a 10-year agreement for Rwanda to host an African Grand Prix in the early 2030s, according to Nile Post. The race, to be branded the Formula One African Grand Prix presented by Visit Rwanda, is planned for a new permanent circuit in Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of Kigali. The first event will depend on completion of the track and related infrastructure, which are expected to meet FIA Grade 1 standards.

The deal is presented as the result of years of talks between Rwanda and Formula One, and it would bring the championship back to Africa for the first time since 1993, when the last Formula One World Championship race was held at South Africa’s Kyalami circuit. The Bugesera venue is also part of a broader sports, tourism and commercial development effort led by the Rwanda Development Board, with the site intended to host other events beyond Grand Prix weekends.

Nile Post reported that Rwanda sees the project as part of its wider push to attract international sport, investment and tourism. President Paul Kagame said the partnership would support jobs, skills and economic activity, while Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali said the move would help reconnect the sport with African fans. The agreement is significant because it could restore Africa to the F1 calendar, but the exact debut date has not yet been announced.
