What the report says

Brazilian defender Jacy Maranhao was injured after a goal celebration went wrong during Coritiba’s match against Chapecoense in the Brazilian top flight, according to BBC Sport Football. The 29-year-old headed in what he thought was a key opener while Coritiba led 1-0 in the 41st minute, then ran toward supporters, jumped the advertising boards and fell into a tunnel on the far side of the hoardings.

BBC Sport reported that Jacy managed to get back out, but he suffered an ankle problem and was later substituted shortly after half-time. In comments quoted by the broadcaster, he said he had “got carried away” and described the injury as sore but not serious. The article also noted that the goal was later ruled out by VAR, adding an unusual twist to an already awkward incident.

The match still ended in a 2-1 win for Coritiba, but the episode drew attention because of both the injury and the stadium layout. BBC Sport said a similar accident had happened at the Couto Pereira Stadium before, including a previous case involving Cameroon striker Joel in 2014. The incident is a reminder of how celebrations can turn risky in tightly built stadium areas and how VAR can change the significance of a moment after the fact.
