Brazil's President Lula hails oil discovery near Amazon river

What the report says
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has welcomed an oil discovery near the mouth of the Amazon river, calling it potentially important for the country’s future. The announcement followed exploratory drilling by state-run Petrobras in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, an offshore area that has drawn sharp criticism from environmental groups because of the risk of spills in a highly biodiverse region.
According to BBC World News, the oil was found in the sea about 175km off the Amazon coast, but the overall size of the field is still unknown. It is also not yet clear whether production would be commercially viable. Petrobras began the deep-water exploration in October 2025, and its chief executive, Magda Chambriard, said the result supported the company’s expectations and its goal of helping ensure Brazil’s energy security.
Lula has argued that oil revenue could help finance Brazil’s transition away from fossil fuels, while insisting he remains committed to climate goals and the growth of renewable energy and biofuels. The president also rejected outside pressure over the project, framing it as a matter of national sovereignty.
The BBC report said the issue has political and economic significance ahead of Brazil’s presidential election, while nearby communities have already seen expectations of jobs and investment rise.
