Brazil fines TikTok $30m for child data privacy violations

Brazil’s data protection authority has fined TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, nearly $30 million over alleged violations involving the personal data of children and teenagers, according to Al Jazeera’s report published Aug. 25, 2026. The regulator said the platform collected and processed young users’ information without an adequate legal basis or sufficient safeguards, affecting both logged-in accounts and guest browsing sessions.

The authority estimated that TikTok may have handled data from at least 8 million children, citing weaknesses in the app’s age-verification system. It also ordered ByteDance to delete data it said was obtained unlawfully. The company has 10 days to appeal, the regulator said.

Brazil also instructed TikTok to improve its youth-protection measures, with particular concern about the platform’s logged-out feed, which lets people browse content without an account. The regulator said that feature makes it easier for minors to use the service while avoiding age checks. Al Jazeera noted that the feature is available in Brazil but not in the United States or Europe, where access is limited to registered users.

The case comes amid broader pressure in Brazil on major tech platforms. The report said authorities have recently taken similar action against Discord and that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government and the Supreme Court have both pushed to regulate minors’ online access, alongside comparable efforts in other countries.
