BBC News reported that Toby Peart, a 13-year-old from Strathpeffer in the Highlands, was among the first patients in Scotland to have brain surgery supported by 3D exoscope technology. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said it is the first Scottish health board to install the B 3D system, which is used to help surgeons see brain tumours more clearly during complex operations.

According to the BBC, Toby’s symptoms began in April 2025 with pins and needles and pain in his left leg, then worsened over several months. An MRI scan at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness in November found a brain tumour, and he was referred within days to Glasgow for specialist care. Further tests identified a tumour of about 13–14mm on the right side of his brain, and surgery was recommended.

Toby’s father, Marc Peart, told BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast that doctors had warned the family the operation could affect Toby’s speech, sensation and movement on his left side, and that some effects were visible immediately afterward. He described early signs of recovery, including Toby asking for a drink and later showing movement in his fingers. The BBC reported that Toby improved over the next day, was discharged the following week in time for Christmas, and returned to school in January.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde clinicians said the 3D exoscope offers high-quality imaging, strong illumination and better depth perception. Consultant neurosurgeon Roddy O’Kane said the system allows surgeons to work upright and access views not possible with standard microscopes, while clinical lead Emer Campbell said it is also helping theatre teamwork, workflow and training.
