Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Holds Strong With $25 Million on Friday - Variety

Variety reported that Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” remained the dominant film at the North American box office as it moved into its second weekend, helped by a lack of major new competition. The Universal Pictures release earned $25.9 million domestically on Friday and was projected to reach $84.5 million for the weekend, a 32% decline from its $124 million opening frame.

According to Variety, that pace would put “The Odyssey” at about $283 million in North America after two weekends. The film opened with $264.1 million worldwide, described by the outlet as Nolan’s biggest global debut, ahead of “The Dark Knight Rises,” which launched with $249 million in 2012 and remains his top-grossing film overall at just over $1 billion. Variety noted that “The Odyssey,” despite being an adult-oriented drama running close to three hours, is now positioned as a potential challenger to that benchmark.

Elsewhere on the chart, the filmed theatrical presentation of “Hadestown: The Musical” took second place with an estimated $4 million on Friday and rival projections of $9 million for the weekend. Disney’s live-action “Moana” was third with $3.1 million Friday and an expected $10.8 million weekend, which would bring its domestic total to $102 million.

Variety also reported that “Toy Story 5” placed fourth with $2.9 million Friday and was expected to reach $448.6 million domestically through six weekends, while “Minions & Monsters” followed with $2.8 million Friday and a projected $155 million North American total. The results underscore a summer box office led by major franchise and filmmaker-driven titles, with sharply different outcomes across studios.
