Box Office Global: How Other Films Ranked In 'Odyssey' Heavy Weekend - Deadline

Deadline reported that Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic “The Odyssey” dominated the worldwide box office over the July 20 weekend, opening to an updated $263.7 million globally. The total included $140.2 million from 73 international territories and $123.5 million in North America, making it Nolan’s biggest overseas start and his third-largest domestic opening, according to the outlet. The film was No. 1 in most markets cited by Deadline, though it has not yet opened in China, where it is scheduled for Aug. 14.

Outside “The Odyssey,” Deadline said China’s summer holiday period helped local titles surge. Stephen Chow’s “Kung Fu Soccer” ranked second globally with a $73.7 million second weekend in China and a $214.3 million cumulative total there. Pearl Studio’s animated fantasy comedy “All Wishes Come True” opened strongly with $30.6 million over two days, while Enlight Pictures’ female drama “A Part of Me” began with $13.6 million. The top Hollywood title in China for the frame was Universal’s “Minions & Monsters,” which added $3.6 million in its third weekend.

Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” placed third globally with $43.7 million for the weekend and a $957.3 million worldwide total, putting it near the $1 billion mark. Disney’s live-action “Moana” followed with $42.9 million worldwide in its second weekend, while “Minions & Monsters” reached $358.4 million globally.

Deadline also highlighted Na Hong-Jin’s Cannes sci-fi film “Hope,” which led South Korea for much of the weekend with a $16.4 million opening including previews. The film, starring Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, is set for a U.S. release through Neon on Sept. 9.
