Bosnia general election 2026 explained in maps and charts

What the report says
Bosnians voted on October 4 in a general election that will decide offices at the state, entity and cantonal levels, according to Al Jazeera. More than 3.4 million people were eligible to take part in a contest shaped by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s complex postwar political structure, which divides power between the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska and the Brcko District.
Al Jazeera said this election introduced new voting technology, including biometric voter identification and ballot scanning. Ballots are still cast on paper, but the changes are intended to speed up verification and counting and improve transparency. The Central Election Commission said 75 political parties and four independent candidates were registered.
The presidential race featured separate contests for Bosniak, Croat and Serb seats in the country’s three-member Presidency. Among the notable candidates were incumbent Bosniak member Denis Becirovic, SDA leader Bakir Izetbegovic, Serb incumbent Zeljka Cvijanovic and several Croat candidates. The article also explained that the system’s ethnic divisions often create tensions over representation, especially in the Croat seat and in the broader relationship between the two entities.
Beyond the presidency, voters were choosing members of the Parliamentary Assembly and entity and cantonal bodies. The stakes extend beyond domestic governance: Al Jazeera noted that the outcome could affect Bosnia’s ability to advance European Union reforms, after the country received EU candidate status in 2022 and opened accession talks in 2024. Preliminary results were expected on election night, with final results due by November 20.
