Boehly and Walter sell Chelsea stakes to Clearlake

What the report says
Chelsea’s ownership structure has shifted again, with Clearlake Capital taking full control of the Premier League club after chairman Todd Boehly, director Mark Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss sold their stakes, BBC Sport Football reported on 17 September 2026. Clearlake is led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano.
According to the BBC’s report, Boehly, Walter and Wyss each held a 12.8% share, while Clearlake already owned 61.5% of the club. The move means Boehly will step down as chairman, a role he has held since 2022, when the consortium completed its £2.3bn purchase of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.
The article said discussions inside the ownership group had been under way for months after a split emerged in 2024, prompting both sides to consider buying one another out. Boehly said it had been an honour to serve as chairman and thanked staff, players, the league and supporters. He also said he believed Chelsea was well placed for future success under Clearlake’s leadership.
The change matters because it gives one ownership bloc complete control of a major English club at a time when Chelsea’s long-term sporting and financial direction remains closely watched. In general, full ownership can simplify decision-making, although it can also sharpen expectations around results and investment.
