The vessel was reported to have started taking on water about four miles from shore near the coastal town of Kyrenia, where local authorities coordinated the response.

BBC World News said Kyrenia mayor Murat Senkul told CNN Turk that 159 passengers had been reached so far and described the situation as very serious. The transport minister of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Erhan Arikli, separately told local media that 100 passengers had been brought ashore. The report did not confirm whether those figures overlapped, and the total number of people rescued remained unclear.

Helicopters, coastguard boats and ambulances were deployed to the scene, while local television showed images of an upside-down ferry with people wearing life vests on top of the hull. The incident occurred in the northern part of Cyprus, an area controlled by the TRNC, which is recognized only by Turkey and has been divided from the rest of the island since 1974.
