Rock Paper Shotgun reports that Blizzard has dismissed a World of Warcraft developer after internal-use abilities were used on a live server to instantly defeat Mythic+ dungeon bosses for a group of regular player accounts. The incident came to wider attention after community members examined combat logs that appeared to show a test spell, identified in the article as “Area Death (TEST),” being used during the run.

According to the publisher, Blizzard community manager Kaivax said the company had monitored and confirmed that a World of Warcraft group received an unfair advantage through misuse of development-only spells on a live realm. Blizzard described the conduct as the action of one employee, said it violated the company’s Code of Conduct, and said the employee was no longer with the company effective immediately. The company also said it would take action against player accounts it considered complicit.

Blizzard said a limited number of staff can access developer tools and spells on live World of Warcraft servers for testing and urgent fixes, but that use is logged and reviewed by its Platform Security team. The studio said those controls supported its conclusion that the incident was isolated to a single person.

The case matters because Mythic+ dungeons are a competitive part of World of Warcraft, with runs tracked by players and third-party ranking sites. Any use of staff-only tools to help a player group can affect trust in the fairness of live-service games, especially where progression, rankings and rewards depend on equal enforcement of rules.
