The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Patrick Kane is returning to the Chicago Blackhawks on a two-year contract with an $8 million salary-cap hit, reuniting one of the franchise’s defining players with the team he led for much of his career. The agreement was announced Thursday after Kane, a Buffalo native, weighed offers from both the Blackhawks and the Sabres, according to the report.

General manager Kyle Davidson framed the move as a celebration of Kane’s long impact in Chicago, noting in a team statement that Kane helped produce many of the organization’s biggest moments over 16 seasons. Kane’s agent, Pat Brisson, told the Sun-Times by text that Kane was highly enthusiastic about returning and viewed Chicago as the right place for him. The team said the contract includes a full no-movement clause.

The signing reverses a previous roster-building direction under Davidson, who traded Kane to the New York Rangers in 2023 and chose not to re-sign Jonathan Toews while clearing space for a younger core. Kane, now 37, spent the past three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings and remained productive, totaling 163 points in 189 games, including 57 points last season, the Sun-Times reported.

Kane’s return gives Blackhawks fans a major storyline after several difficult seasons and could eventually pair him with Connor Bedard, though Bedard is recovering from shoulder surgery and is not expected to open the season alongside him. Kane and Davidson are scheduled to discuss the deal at a Friday news conference.
