What the report says

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Marvel Studios used its Saturday panel at San Diego Comic-Con to confirm new details for “Black Panther 3,” including a Dec. 15, 2028 theatrical release date. Marvel chief Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler announced that the sequel will be shot on 70mm and introduced David Jonsson as a grown version of T’Challa’s son.

Jonsson, whose recent credits include “Alien: Romulus,” “The Long Walk” and HBO’s “Industry,” is set to take on the Black Panther role in the film, according to the report. THR noted that “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ended by revealing that T’Challa, played in the original film by the late Chadwick Boseman, had a young son with Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o. The report said Marvel has not yet explained how the character will appear as an adult, leaving open possibilities such as a time jump or other story device.

The announcement is significant for one of Marvel’s most prominent franchises. The 2018 “Black Panther” became a major commercial and awards success, grossing $1.3 billion worldwide and earning a best picture Oscar nomination. After Boseman’s death in 2020, the sequel shifted focus to Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, as Wakanda mourned T’Challa.

THR reported that the third film is expected to arrive after “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which could make it relevant to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Comic-Con panel also included other Marvel announcements, but the “Black Panther 3” reveal was positioned as one of the event’s central moments.
