Bezos-backed consortium buys a third of Liverpool

What the report says
Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have agreed to sell a strategic minority stake of about one-third of the club to a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, according to BBC Sport. The deal is said to value Liverpool at more than £5bn, with FSG retaining majority ownership and operational control.
BBC Sport reported that the investment vehicle is 1892 Holdings and that Bhatia is expected to become vice-chairman, subject to regulatory approval. Bezos is not set to join the board, but Bryan Baum of K5 Sports, through which Bezos is investing, is among those expected to take board seats. Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder, is also part of the consortium.
The report said the transaction should not change Liverpool’s transfer-window plans or create a separate transfer budget. FSG said the investment supports the club’s long-term growth and brings in experience from global business, technology and investment. The owners bought Liverpool for £300m in 2010, and the article noted the club’s rise in value has come alongside major off-field investment and recent on-field success, including Premier League and Champions League titles.
For context, the story also highlighted fan interest and some concern about the involvement of a high-profile billionaire and Amazon figures, reflecting Liverpool supporters’ traditional emphasis on the club’s identity and values.
