Beyond Chalk and Talk: British Council Challenges Lango Teachers to Put CBC Skills to Work

Teachers in Alebtong District, Uganda, have been encouraged to move away from lecture-style instruction and focus more on helping learners build practical skills under the country’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The report from Dokolo Post says the message was delivered during a four-day “Leaders in Teaching” training at Aloi Secondary School, which began on Tuesday and involves teachers from nine government-aided schools in the district.

British Council Programme Manager Janan Eochu said many teachers had accepted the new curriculum but still needed support to turn its ideas into classroom practice. The training, run by the British Council with the Ministry of Education and Sports and funded by the Mastercard Foundation, is covering learner-centred methods, collaborative and project-based learning, gender-responsive teaching, practical and real-life learning, and continuous assessment.

According to the report, the programme is intended to continue beyond the workshop. Schools are expected to form Continuous Professional Development committees, and a WhatsApp chatbot will be introduced to give teachers access to CBC materials and lesson plans. Alebtong District Education Officer Agel Moses said the effort should improve classroom practice, assessment, and learners’ confidence and life skills, while district inspectors monitor implementation.

Aloi Secondary School headteacher Dorcus Ejang said about 227 teachers are taking part and that some still need help with scenario-based assessment and project design. Similar trainings are being held across Lango, with more districts to follow next week. The broader effort is aimed at reaching underserved schools and supporting a larger rollout of CBC across the region.
