Besigye Discharged from Mulago and Returned to Luzira - Prisons

Uganda Prisons Service has confirmed that opposition politician Kizza Besigye was discharged from Mulago National Referral Hospital on August 7 and taken back to Luzira Prisons Hospital, resolving several days of uncertainty about his location and condition. The statement came from Frank Baine Mayanja, the prisons spokesperson, who said Besigye is now under the care of the prison medical team and that his health is improving.

According to the report by Nile Post, Besigye had spent about 10 days at Mulago after collapsing in court in Kampala on July 29 during his treason trial. He was initially admitted to intensive care after becoming unresponsive in the courtroom. The clarification followed concern from his family and the People’s Front for Freedom, who had questioned conflicting accounts about where he had been taken after leaving Mulago.

The prisons service said Besigye’s immediate family members and personal doctors, including his sister Dr. Olive Kobusingye, can still access him while he continues treatment. It also asked the public to ignore what it described as misinformation about his whereabouts and health. The service did not reveal the medical condition that led to his admission or provide details of the treatment. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, has been in custody with his aide Hajj Obeid Lutale since November 2024 and faces treason charges, which they deny.
