Oceanographic Magazine reports that researchers have confirmed a deep-water coral reef off Benin is alive, decades after surveys in the 1960s had treated the structure as likely dead. The team used modern sonar along with the Deep Sea Camera System from the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab to revisit an area first noted during earlier work aimed at mapping fishing grounds.

According to the report, the study’s lead author is Gérard Zinzindohoué of the Institut de Recherches Halieutiques et Océanologiques du Bénin, and the findings were published in Frontiers in Marine Science. The reef lies more than 50 metres below the surface and may be part of a mesophotic coral ecosystem, a deeper reef environment where lower light levels can produce more scattered coral communities than those often seen in shallow tropical reefs.

Guided by historical records, the researchers mapped 11.5 kilometres of seabed and identified two sonar signals that appeared consistent with reef formations. Follow-up visual surveys using an underwater drone and camera system recorded eight coral types and eight fish species, including golden African snappers, blackbar soldierfish, Guinean angelfish, West African goatfish, Monrovia doctorfish, three-banded butterflyfish and two damselfish species. Oceanographic Magazine notes that coral species identifications remain provisional because direct sampling has not yet been carried out.

The discovery matters because deep reefs in this part of West Africa remain poorly studied, and the site could provide evidence about long-term environmental change in the region. Researchers have not determined whether the reef recovered after earlier damage or whether the 1960s assessment was incomplete. Historical reports cited in the article suggest a much larger reef barrier may extend nearby, but further surveys and sampling would be needed to confirm that.
