Benin: How Benin Is Turning Its Cotton Wealth Into An Industrial Economy

Benin is trying to convert its role as West Africa’s largest cotton producer into a broader industrial base by processing more of the crop at home, according to AllAfrica’s reported Bird Story Agency article. The main example is the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ), about 45 kilometres north of Cotonou, where cotton is being turned into fabrics and garments rather than exported mainly as raw fibre. The project is presented as part of a larger effort to create formal jobs, build skills and keep more value from the agricultural sector inside the country.

The article says the GDIZ is a public-private partnership between the Beninese state and Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms. Construction began in 2021, and the zone is planned to cover 1,640 hectares, with the first phase on 400 hectares. It is designed not only for textiles but also for processing cashew nuts, soybeans, maize and some mineral resources. Workers interviewed in the piece described gaining experience in an industry that has expanded quickly, while the zone’s management says its infrastructure, customs and administrative services are meant to make manufacturing easier for investors.
