Belgium bans imports from Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine

Al Jazeera reported that Belgium’s federal government has approved a ban on imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The decision, reported by the Belgian News Agency Belga, was taken at the government’s last cabinet meeting before the summer break and was published by Al Jazeera on July 18, 2026. The outlet said the measure fulfils a commitment Belgium made last year amid concern over Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and the death toll there.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin welcomed the Belgian move on X and urged other governments to take similar steps. Al Jazeera said Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot had also pushed European Union counterparts in Brussels this week to support an EU-wide ban, criticizing the European Commission’s approach as insufficient. The issue remains unresolved at bloc level, with EU foreign ministers divided over how far to restrict trade linked to settlements.

The report cited a Global Echo Litigation Center investigation into more than 30,000 export documents covering Israeli agricultural shipments to Europe. According to Al Jazeera, the investigation found that a notable share included goods grown in settlements in the occupied West Bank or Golan Heights, and that exporters often obscured the origin of the products through labelling, blending or routing practices.

Belgium joins other European countries taking national action while the EU remains deadlocked. Al Jazeera listed Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Ireland among states that have moved toward prohibitions, while noting that national bans can have limited effect because goods cleared in one EU member state may circulate across the single market. The broader debate matters because the EU is Israel’s largest trading partner, and any bloc-wide policy would carry significantly more economic and diplomatic weight than individual national measures.
