What the report says

The UK Green Party has triggered a political row after delegates at its conference voted to define Zionism as a form of racism and to back a broader set of pro-Palestinian positions, according to Al Jazeera. The vote was binding and passed by 1,022 to 813. It also reaffirmed support for Palestinian liberation, the right of return and the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement, while calling for a single democratic state across historic Palestine.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Israel and exposed disagreements inside the party. Al Jazeera reported that four of the Green Party’s five members of parliament opposed parts of the resolution. Israeli officials accused the party of legitimising anti-Jewish hatred and of encouraging hostility toward Israel. Israel also barred Green leader Zack Polanski from entering the country, a move the report linked to his planned political activity in London. Polanski, who is Jewish, said that if Zionism leads to the displacement of Palestinians, then it is racist, though he rejected parts of the motion on statehood.

Al Jazeera’s piece places the controversy in a longer historical context. It notes that the UN General Assembly adopted a 1975 resolution equating Zionism with racism, later revoked in 1991 after pressure from the United States and others. The article also cites Jewish Voice for Peace and a 2024 UK employment tribunal case involving anti-Zionist academic David Miller as examples of others who have used similar language. The issue matters because it highlights continuing disputes over Zionism, Israel, anti-Semitism and support for الفلسطينيan rights in international and domestic politics.
