Bayern celebrate Kane’s Ballon d’Or, Kompany’s discharge with Magdeburg win

What the report says
Bayern Munich marked a milestone week for the club on Wednesday in Munich, where they beat second-tier Magdeburg 6-1 in the German Cup second round while resting Harry Kane after his Ballon d’Or triumph. Kane, the England captain, became the first English winner of the award since Michael Owen in 2001 and the first Bayern player to claim it in 45 years. Before kickoff at the Allianz Arena, he received a guard of honour from teammates and was acknowledged by home fans, but he did not play as the club managed his workload ahead of a busy run of domestic and European fixtures.
The match itself was more competitive early on, with Magdeburg briefly equalising and striking the post before Bayern took control after halftime. Michael Olise scored twice, while Ismael Saibari, Alphonso Davies, Nathaniel Brown and teenager David Santos Daiber also found the net as Bayern advanced comfortably. The result kept the Bundesliga leaders on course in the cup and added momentum before Saturday’s league meeting with Borussia Dortmund, with a Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid to follow next week.
The game also came as Bayern provided an update on coach Vincent Kompany. Club official Max Eberl said Kompany had been discharged from hospital after collapsing during a training session last week, describing his condition as improving. According to Al Jazeera’s report, the Belgian had been dealing with a virus and is expected to return only when medically cleared. Assistant coach Aaron Danks handled the team in his absence.
