Barcelona did not hold a planned tribute for its Spain World Cup winners at the club’s first home match of the season, after a dispute involving the Catalan pro-independence estelada flag. According to Al Jazeera’s report, the decision came ahead of Thursday’s La Liga game against Athletic Bilbao at Camp Nou in Barcelona, where local supporters instead staged a separate display in support of the symbol.

The club had intended to honour its eight players who helped Spain win the World Cup last month, the largest group of champions at any one club. Those players include Joan García, Eric García, Pedri, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi, Rodri, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal. Similar tributes had been organized by other Spanish clubs with the national federation, including appearances linked to the trophy and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

Barcelona said it backed away from the tribute after an incident at its previous league match at Elche, where police confiscated an estelada flag from a young fan and detained him after a confrontation. The club described the police response as excessive and said the flag is a lawful form of expression. Club president Joan Laporta said the timing was not suitable for the tribute and argued football should bring people together rather than create conflict.

Before kickoff, a local group distributed about 10,000 small estelada flags outside the stadium, while fans raised them during the club anthem. The episode highlights how Catalonia’s independence symbolism continues to intersect with football and politics in Spain.
