According to Catalan regional police, the worker was a 54-year-old man who is believed to have died after suffering “a blow” while on the job. Emergency services responded to the stadium, but he could not be saved. Authorities have opened an investigation into the workplace accident, the BBC reported.

Barcelona said it deeply regretted the worker’s death and extended support to his family, friends and colleagues. The club also said president Joan Laporta wanted to personally convey his condolences and make himself available to the family on behalf of the organization.

The fatal incident comes during a long-running renovation of Barcelona’s home stadium, which began in June 2023. The works are intended to raise capacity to about 105,000 seats and are expected to continue until early 2028, according to the BBC.
