What the report says

Barcelona have been fined 602 euros (£503) after Atletico Madrid complained about the Spanish club’s contact with striker Julian Alvarez, according to BBC Sport Football. Atletico said Barcelona approached the Argentina international without first notifying them in writing, and the Spanish football association issued the penalty. The case involved a player who remains under contract at Atletico until June 2030.

BBC Sport reported that Atletico also took the matter to Fifa, but football’s world governing body said it did not have jurisdiction. The dispute comes amid a season in which Alvarez has attracted mixed reactions from some Atletico supporters, although he also received applause after scoring a decisive goal against Deportivo La Coruna last weekend.

After that match, Alvarez publicly addressed comments he had made over the summer about wanting to fulfil a dream of playing for Barcelona. He said he understood why fans were upset and apologised for the remark. The BBC also noted that Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in August 2024 on a six-year agreement, and has been an important scorer for Diego Simeone’s team since then. More broadly, the fine is a small but notable reminder of how closely clubs can be policed over direct contact with players under contract elsewhere.
