What the report says

Bank of India Uganda Limited has launched a new debit card aimed at broadening customer access to cash and payments beyond the lender’s three current branches in Uganda. According to Nile Post, the card connects users to more than 650 Interswitch-linked ATMs nationwide and can be used at over 4,900 merchant points. It also supports contactless tap-and-pay transactions at enabled terminals.

The bank said the product is intended to give customers round-the-clock access to their funds, including on weekends and public holidays. Prashant Matovu, identified by the publisher as the bank’s executive director, said the card offers ATM withdrawals across Uganda and some other African centres. The bank also said the card carries a daily cash withdrawal limit of Shs1 million.

Nile Post reported that the rollout is part of a partnership between Bank of India Uganda and Interswitch Uganda Limited, covering both debit card services and agency banking. Srikant Ashok Wikhe, the bank’s managing director, said the arrangement should especially help salaried corporate customers, while also supporting the lender’s shift toward technology-driven banking.

The bank, which started operating in Uganda in 2012, currently has branches on Jinja Road, Bombo Road and in Jinja City, and plans to open another branch at Namanve Industrial Park. More broadly, the launch reflects how Ugandan banks are increasingly using shared payment networks to extend access without relying solely on physical branches.
