What the report says

Bank of India has entered Uganda’s debit card market for the first time through a partnership with Interswitch, according to Nile Post. The launch, announced in Kampala on October 14, 2026, introduces Verve debit cards for Bank of India customers and gives them access to Interswitch’s payment network across the country.

The bank said cardholders will be able to withdraw cash from more than 800 Interswitch-enabled ATMs and pay at over 20,000 merchant locations nationwide. The arrangement also means customers can use their cards for everyday purchases rather than relying mainly on branch visits, which the article said had been the case for some users.

Interswitch said the deal expands the reach of its Verve card scheme and supports Uganda’s digital payments infrastructure. Bank of India’s managing director said the partnership is part of the bank’s effort to improve access to financial services through digital banking and make money access more convenient for customers.

More broadly, the agreement fits a wider trend in Uganda’s banking sector toward card-based and electronic payments, with financial institutions seeking to reduce dependence on cash and branch-only services. Verve, which is Interswitch’s domestic card scheme, will be the exclusive card option for Bank of India customers under this partnership.
