Bangladesh per capita GDP forecast to outstrip India’s: What does it mean?

What the report says
Bangladesh is projected to overtake India in per capita GDP in 2026, according to the IMF’s October 2026 World Economic Outlook, even though India’s overall economy remains much larger. Al Jazeera reported that Bangladesh’s per capita GDP is forecast at $2,886, compared with India’s $2,749, while India’s total GDP is expected to reach $4.15 trillion versus Bangladesh’s $506.4bn. The article also noted that Bangladesh’s economy is expected to grow more slowly than India’s this year, with projected growth of 3.6 percent in Bangladesh and 7 percent in India.
The piece said Bangladesh’s rise has been driven by export-oriented manufacturing, especially its garment sector, along with remittances and greater participation by women in the workforce. It also pointed to signs of pressure, including high inflation, weaker near-term growth and disruptions linked to global energy and shipping routes. By contrast, India has a more diversified economy with a large services sector, a broader industrial base and stronger domestic demand.
Al Jazeera emphasized that per capita GDP is only a partial measure of living standards. The report said the comparison changes when adjusted for purchasing power parity, which accounts for local prices: on that basis, India is projected to remain ahead. The article also cautioned that average income figures can hide inequality and do not show how wealth is distributed within each country.
The report placed the numbers in a wider regional context, describing Bangladesh as a notable South Asian growth story but one facing fresh economic headwinds. It suggested that the per capita crossover is symbolically important, yet it does not by itself mean that living conditions or economic strength are better in Bangladesh than in India.
