Bangladesh elects ruling party veteran Alamgir as president

What the report says
Bangladesh’s parliament has elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a senior figure in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, as the country’s next president. Al Jazeera reported that the vote took place on Thursday and filled a vacancy created after the resignation of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin, who stepped down citing health concerns before the end of his term.
According to the report, Alamgir won by a 255-88 parliamentary vote over Oli Ahmed, a retired army colonel and opposition candidate backed by an alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami. The presidency in Bangladesh is largely ceremonial, but it remains the formal head of state and commander-in-chief. The constitution requires a new president to be chosen within 90 days of a vacancy.
Alamgir, 78, has been active in politics since his student days and later became one of the better-known BNP leaders. Al Jazeera noted that he has held several government posts, including local government, agriculture, aviation and tourism, and was frequently detained during the years of Sheikh Hasina’s rule, which he has described as politically motivated.
The election comes after major political change in Bangladesh following the ouster of Hasina’s Awami League government in 2024 and the BNP’s return to power. In broader context, the presidential role is largely symbolic, but the selection still reflects the current balance of power in Dhaka and the continued reshaping of the country’s post-2024 political order.
