Bali jails Swiss tourist for insulting sacred Day of Silence

What the report says
A Swiss tourist has been sentenced to one year in prison in Bali after a video and social media post about the island’s Hindu Day of Silence drew widespread anger, according to Nile Post’s report citing BBC and Associated Press coverage. The man, identified as 26-year-old Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, filmed himself walking to an empty beach during Nyepi, a holiday when residents and visitors are expected to stay indoors, avoid noise and follow strict restrictions across the Indonesian island.
The video, which was later removed, reportedly described the quiet scene as “crazy.” Local media also said the post included expletives. He was arrested in March after the clip spread online and prompted backlash from Balinese users. During the trial, the judge said the conduct offended Balinese people, hurt their faith and led to public outrage.
Zgraggen told the court he did not understand how strict the Nyepi rules were and said he did not intend to insult the local community. He also apologised, according to the Associated Press. Nyepi, observed on 19 March this year, is one of Bali’s most important religious holidays, and the island effectively shuts down for the day, including its airport and many forms of entertainment. The case adds to concerns among Balinese authorities about tourist misconduct on the island, where authorities have previously warned foreign visitors against disrespectful behavior at religious sites and other violations.
