Babalanda Hails Gen. Moses Ali as Patriot, Statesman and Champion of Peace

Nile Post reports that Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda led tributes to Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali during a special parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, describing the former First Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West MP as a national figure whose public life was tied to service, reconciliation and stability. The sitting was chaired by Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth. According to President Yoweri Museveni, Ali died on Saturday at Nakasero Hospital after treatment for unspecified illnesses; his family said he had slipped into a coma. He was 87.

Babalanda said Ali’s career stretched across more than five decades in the military, Parliament and Cabinet. Nile Post reports that she highlighted his long representation of West Nile, including East Moyo from 2001 and later Adjumani West from 2016 until his death. She said Parliament would miss his experience, restraint in debate and ability to build consensus across political lines.

The tribute also focused on Ali’s role in ending armed conflict in West Nile. The report recalls that after the fall of Idi Amin’s government, Ali went into exile in Sudan and later led the Uganda National Rescue Front. After the NRM took power, he signed a 1988 peace deal that brought UNRF fighters into the national army, a step widely associated with restoring calm in the region.

Nile Post says Ali held several senior posts over the years, including Deputy Prime Minister, First Deputy Prime Minister and ministerial roles linked to refugees, disaster preparedness and northern Uganda affairs. A regional farewell was expected in Adjumani, followed by Janaza prayers and burial. He is survived by four wives and 30 children.
