Aviation Authority Hosts ICAO Regional Workshop to Strengthen Airport Security

What the report says
Nile Post reported that the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), working with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (CASSOA), has opened a regional Airport Security Programme workshop in Entebbe. The event began on Monday at Protea Hotel and is intended to improve airport security planning and readiness against changing aviation security risks across East Africa.
According to the report, the workshop has drawn aviation security specialists, regulators and airport security staff. Its focus includes improving risk assessment, aligning airport security programmes with international standards, and strengthening compliance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices. ICAO and CASSOA experts are facilitating the sessions, with participants expected to share best practices and develop more coordinated regional responses to emerging threats.
UCAA Director of Airports and Aviation Security Eng. Ayub Sooma said, as cited by Nile Post, that aviation threats are becoming more complex and require stronger prevention, detection and response measures. He also framed the programme as part of a shared effort by UCAA, ICAO and CASSOA to protect passengers, crew, ground personnel and the wider public while maintaining confidence in air transport.
The development matters because Entebbe International Airport is Uganda’s main international gateway, and aviation security relies heavily on consistent procedures, trained personnel and cross-border coordination. Nile Post also reported that UCAA says it has been improving security at Entebbe through staff training, infrastructure upgrades and implementation of ICAO guidance. The workshop is expected to provide participants with updated strategies to better protect the region’s aviation sector.
