What the report says

Avian Conservation Uganda is set to host a conservation run in Kampala on Sunday, October 18, as part of efforts to draw attention to falling bird populations and the need to protect species such as the Crested Crane and the habitats they depend on. According to Nile Post, the event is intended to encourage public involvement in bird conservation and to highlight pressures facing birds, wetlands, trees and forests.

The organisation launched the run by presenting an official T-shirt to the Minister of Culture, Heritage and Tourism, Dr Anthony Wamala, who also unveiled it. Wamala backed the campaign and said bird protection is tied not only to the environment but also to cultural identity, particularly for some Baganda traditions and institutions. He urged a strong turnout and noted that money raised from T-shirt sales will help support conservation efforts.

Catherine Nakalule, speaking for Avian Conservation Uganda, said the initiative came from concern that bird conservation has not received enough attention despite ongoing declines and threats. She encouraged members of the public to take part in the run and support the broader effort to protect birds and their habitats. The T-shirts are priced at Shs35,000, and the run will begin at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.

More broadly, bird conservation in Uganda is often linked to the protection of wetlands and other ecosystems, which many species rely on. The organisers say they hope the event will build wider public support for safeguarding the country’s natural heritage.
