At least one dead after car crashes into crowd in northern France

BBC World News reported that at least one person was killed and 10 others injured after a car struck a crowd near a train station in Caen, in northern France, on 27 August 2026. Police said the vehicle appeared to have driven deliberately into pedestrians in the street opposite the station, prompting a major emergency response in the Normandy city.

A male suspect was later arrested about 20 kilometers away in Ouistreham, a port town on the coast. Local officials said seven of the injured were in critical condition and three had minor injuries. Authorities said the victims appeared to be men aged between 17 and 40. Police also said the suspect, a 26-year-old born in Russia, was not previously known to intelligence services and had only been noted for traffic offenses.

The incident happened near a bar, and local media reported that a fight had broken out there beforehand. BBC quoted a senior security official in Caen as saying investigators were not, at that stage, treating the case as a terrorist attack, though the inquiry was just beginning. Police have opened a criminal investigation, led by Caen’s Specialized Crime Division, and residents were advised to stay away from the train-station area.
